An Introduction to Hair Removal

Whether it is the choice of a trained depilation/epilation expert, or to do your own hair removal in the privacy of your home. Perhaps the choice of permanent or temporary hair removal, which methods are best suited to the different parts of the body. Gadgets, creams, lotions and potions are all covered at Hair Removal Systems.

This page gives an overview of hair removal, so from here I would suggest you read the Temporary and Permanent hair removal pages, then get into greater detail by going to each method of hair removal.  If you have a particular problem or know what you are looking for then jump straight to the page by using the site map on the left, or the navigation tabs at the top of the page.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, we would love to hear from you, just go to the "about us" page and send us an email.  Good luck with your hair removal.

Body image today is probably more important than it has ever been, with women exposing more of their bodies, and the trend in males to follow the hairless look, the demand for hair removal treatments are increasing annually.  The professional help, advice and products on the market reflect this trend towards the smooth look.

Hair removal falls into two main categories, permanent and temporary. The hair follicle is a tube structure growing from a bulb or root below the surface of the skin. The hair, a protein called keratin grows through a cycle and then drops out, while another hair grows from the same root.  Permanent hair removal (epilation) is where the root is removed or killed, while Temporary (depilation) is the removal of the hair follicles above the surface of the skin.

As the different methods of hair removal are suited to different parts of the body these are covered under each topic, as are the other choices you are confronted with such as; cost, pain, convenience and safety.

Modern technology has played a big part in the latest hair removal techniques, treatments such as laser, electrolysis and intense pulsed light (IPL) are now widely available, albeit a bit more expensive than traditional methods. As price is a major consideration, try to visit the clinic or beauty salon first.  You will want to know that the premises are clean and hygienic and that the staff is professional and knowledgeable.

Although hair removal is considered to be a safe procedure some people can have allergies or adverse reactions.  Be sure to discuss any concerns you have beforehand.  If you are doing your own hair removal, be very sure to follow instructions.  All products have been tried and tested to make sure they are as user friendly as possible, though some may make claims they can't live up to.

Hair never stops growing in the areas we want it to, and though we use terms like "permanent"; this is not really the case.  Laser hair removal will probably last about a year, while waxing could last a few months, and shaving will only last a few days.

Pregnant and nursing women should always consult a physician before undergoing any hair removal treatments that involve chemicals, drugs or energies such as laser or electrolysis.

Thanks to modern science we can now view hair removal as just another procedure to help us maintain the youthful look and body image that we crave.
